Mega Maths with CardEd!

I’m one for getting as much out of a resource as possible. If you have already printed our Movement Games and Activities cards (see blog post here for more information), here are some further suggestions for lots of ways to use the enclosed 10 CardEd cards to boost mathematical thinking. For ease, the cards are included in today’s download also.

As ever, the suggestions are for a range of ages and stages as our aim for CardEd is to have a multi-purpose resource families can use to promote teaching, learning, fun and positive family time.

  • For lots of the activities, you require nothing other than the cards, however, some of the suggestions include items that you most probably have (dice, building blocks, lollipop sticks, paper, toys etc.)
  • If necessary, swap our CardEd cards for playing cards if your child requires pictorial representations of the number.
  • Adapt the activities, working only within the 1-5 range if necessary.

Your FREE download includes 25 activity ideas with suggestions for ways to vary them to suit different age ranges.

Below, I list 5 of the challenges to give you a flavour of the download contents.

Number Recognition

  • Shuffle the cards and ask your child to choose one. Can they show you the number on the card using their fingers?
  • To make this more difficult, ask them to put their hands on their heads or behind their backs (so they can’t look at the fingers) and now show you the number.

Number Sequences Forwards

  • Shuffle the cards and lay them on the table.
  • Can your child sequence them from 1-10?
  • Ask your child to close their eyes and turn one card over.
  • Can they tell you which number has been hidden?
  • Ask your child to count from 1-10, pointing to the correct number each time, to check the sequence is now correct.
Variation:
  • Ask your child to close their eyes and mix up the sequence.
  • Can they spot the changes you have made and correct them.
  • Ask your child to count from 1-10, pointing to the correct number each time, to check the sequence is now correct.

Memory Match (Number Bonds to 10)

  • Shuffle the cards (omit 10) and lay out face-down on the table.
  • In turns, players turn over 2 cards, with the aim of finding a pair of numbers that add to give 10.

CardEd + LEGO (or other building blocks) (Height)

  • Player 1 turns over a CardEd card, e.g., 5. and builds a tower of 5.
  • Player 2 selects a card and build their tower.
  • Compare.
  • Who has the highest/tallest/shortest tower?
  • What is the difference between them?
Variation:
  • In turns, turn over a card each and keep adding to the tower each time.
  • Who has the tallest tower?
  • By how much?
  • What is the best card to get?
  • Which card would you like to avoid?

Shape Value

  • Assign a value to the coloured shapes, e.g., Black = 1, Red = 2, Yellow = 3, Blue = 4, Green = 5
  • Calculate how much your shape zone is worth.
  • Which card is the most valuable?
  • Which card is the least valuable?

One of the key concepts we aim to embed with young children is a strong concept of number. This download includes lots of activities to support embedding this, as well as extensions and challenge activities for older learners.

Quite a lot of parents report having maths anxiety, and this can sometimes be due to the fact we focus on being right or wrong in maths lessons. As you work with your child, focus less on getting the right answer, instead, experiment with numbers and explore the process. Considered from this point-of-view, maths becomes less daunting, performance pressure is reduced, and (believe it or not) there is lots of fun to be had.
